A small sailing boat moored at the harbour side.
Looking uphill along the main street leading from the port to the famous church of Panagia Evangelistria (Our Lady of Good Tidings). Lined with shops selling religious and craft items.
Tony and Tatiana outside the entrance to Panagia Evangelistria. The church was built around an icon, which many miracles have been attributed to. According to tradition the icon was found after the Virgin Mary appeared to the nun St. Pelagia and revealed to her the place where the icon was buried. Construction of the church began following the icon’s discovery in 1823. It was inaugurated in 1830.
It is traditional for pilgrims to crawl on hands and knees from the port up the hill to the church to ask for help for their sick children.
The holy icon now almost completely encased in silver, gold and jewels. It depicts the Virgin Mary kneeling with her head bent in prayer.
Looking down into a large courtyard, which is part of the church.
Tony and Tatiana both touching a metallic statue of a female pilgrim crawling on her hands and knees, near the church.
