Welcome to the exciting website of Tony Giles – blind world traveller and writer.
I am totally blind and 80% deaf in both ears, but am able to hear and communicate with hearing aids.
I've visited over 130 countries, plus all seven continents, and all 50 states of the USA.
I've also crossed the Arctic Circle, travelled in every South American country and explored all 10 Canadian provinces.
My aim is to visit all of the World's countries.
I'm an adrenaline junky and love to bungee jump!
I've written three Ebooks about my world adventures.
My books are travel biographies containing observations and experiences of a blind man as he explores the world having crazy adventures.
I originate from Weston-super-Mare in the South West of England and presently I live in Teignmouth, Devon.
I had a successful kidney transplant in 2008.
I have a partner named Tatiana from Greece, who travels with me occasionally.

My eBooks are travel biographies of the observations and experiences of a totally blind and partially deaf man as he travels independently around the world having exciting adventures. The most recent volume, Seeing a Slice of Southern Africa My Way, published 31 December 2020, is a journey of continued self-discovery as I plot my way from multi-cultural South Africa with its complex society, to Malawi, with its picturesque and peaceful nature. This third book takes the reader through parts of Southern Africa, and offers a brief glimpse into a little of Lesotho, Swaziland, Mozambique, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Manneken Pis video (11th September 2023)

Tony at the Manneken Pis monument in Brussels, capital of Belgium, on a sunny evening in July. He is with his travel partner, Tatiana. They are enjoying the gentle sound of the little boy pissing!

Flowing water from the boy’s penis! A famous monument and statue in Brussels, it has been in Belgium’s capital from at least the 16th century and, possibly, before. Manneken Pis is so famous, people even make clothes for the little guy. There is now also a ‘Pissing girl’ monument. Mannekin Pis now is, unfortunately, surrounded by metal bars, to prevent him being stolen or damaged.

Blog post / Cameroon Travels So Far! (13th March 2023)

I’ve now been in hot and interesting Cameroon for 2 weeks, apparently, and the time has flown by! I started in busy Douala, the country’s economic capital and largest city, located on the Wouri River estuary. It’s busy and noisy with motorbikes whizzing everywhere simultaneously, bumping over the pot-hole rough streets! Walking about blind, is not easy in Douala, or Cameroon itself for that matter. I stayed 3 nights at the Hotel Astoria, a reasonably priced establishment and took a taxi tour of the central area of the city on both of my main two days there.

Tony is listening to the crashing waves roll in on Tara Beach in the seaside town of Kribi in south Cameroon on a warm evening. The wind is blowing and the sand under Tony’s feet is soft.

Some links to a newish media platform and website: primarily for blind-visually impaired and disabled writers with interesting stories. But available to all. It is a paid platfoorm and I’m not sure if it is fully accessible without paying to read it. But another place for travel/other interest disabled/non/disabled writers to present their work, so thought I’d share it. I was interviewed by the author/founder of the website last year. Tony and Tatiana at Kents Cavern prehistoric cave system (13th February 2023)

Tony and Tatiana on a paid guided tour of Kents Cavern, a prehistoric cave system near Torquay on the Devon Riviera, in the south-west of England. 7th February 2023.

As people can see and hear, the knowledgeable guide is giving details about the origin of the cavern system’s name as Tony and Tatiana, along with other tourists, wander through this remarkable ancient cave system. This cave system, with its many fascinating chambers, is part of the English Riviera UNESCO Global Geopark.

Tony with Flamingos (17th December 2022)

Tony is just outside Walvis Bay on Namibia’s Atlantic coast and is surrounded by thousands of pink flamingos; large birds with long legs and necks. They seem to be eating small fish or insects in the mud of the lagoon. The voice heard on the video is Tony and his local taxi driver and friend, Max, who Tony met previously on his trip to the Cape Cross Seal Colony. Video taken on Thursday, 15 December 2022. A lovely sight of nature.

Quad biking in Namibia (12th December 2022)

Tony is on the back of a quad bike, being driven up and down the sand dunes of the mighty Namib Desert, just outside the small tourist town of Swakopmund, on the mid Atlantic coast of Namibia, Southern Africa. Taken on Saturday, 10th December 2022.

See the awesome sight of sand dunes in the background and sand flying everywhere. Tony is sat on the back, holding on for dear life as he is driven at high speed through these amazing sand hills. What great fun!!!

Blog post / An Amazing Adventure! (1st December 2022)

Had an amazing day in Sao Tome. This morning I went with a local guide, after hiring a car for the day, and a young, shy, local lady to Ilheu das Rolas – a small tropical island just off the southern tip of Sao Tome island.

It took a good 2 hours to drive there, what with winding and twisting roads and the many potholes. Several parts of the roads were rock and gravel tracks,
