Colchester

Colchester is a historic city in the east of England, located on the River Colne and situated 50 miles (80 kilometres) north-east of London. The city occupies the site of Camulodunum, the first major city and first capital of Roman Britain. Colchester has a Norman castle, Roman walls, and many other attractive old buildings.

Tony and Tatiana stood outside the entrance to the Natural History Museum on Colchester High Street. The old Gothic-arched doorway behind was once the entrance to All Saints Church. The museum now occupies this former church.

Tunis is the capital and largest city of Tunisia. The greater urban area around Tunis, known as Grand Tunis, has a population of 2,700,000 people. The city is situated in the north-east of the country on the Mediterranean Gulf of Tunis.

Doorway into the Auberge El Medina hostel, where Tony stayed, located in the old Medina of Tunis. The decorative double doorway is painted yellow with simple geometric patterns made-up of metal studs. This style of doorway is common on old buildings in Tunisia. The pattern on each door is unique.

Dartmouth Castle, Devon, England, August 2021

Tony outside the entrance to Dartmouth Castle. The ticket office and shop can be seen in the background. This concrete building dates from World War Two and originally housed a gun position used to guard shipping passing along the Dart Estuary below. It has a crenellated roof intended to disguise it as a medieval turret.

Kronborg Castle, Helsingor

Tony and Tatiana standing under the arch of the entrance gate at Kronborg Castle. Beyond there is a substantial brick retaining wall with a moat hidden in front. Behind this the castle itself can be clearly seen with a large turret or tourelle projecting prominently from the corner of the roof.

Kronborg Castle is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is considered one of the most important Renaissance castles in Northern Europe.

Odense, Denmark, September 2021

Odense is considered the third-largest city in Denmark. It’s the main city of the island of Funen (Danish: Fyn) in Southern Denmark. By road, Odense is located 45 kilometres (28 miles) north of Svendborg, 144 kilometres (89 miles) to the south of Aarhus and 167 kilometres (104 miles) to the southwest of Copenhagen. Hans Christian Andersen, who’s best known for his writings of fairy tales, was born in, and spent his early childhood, in Odense.
