Petermann Island is a small island just off the west side of the Antarctic Peninsula, Antarctica (coordinates, 65°10’S 64°10’W). A short distance south of Booth Island and the Lemaire Channel. Length, 2 km (1.2 miles). The island was discovered by a German expedition of 1873-74, who named it after geographer August Petermann. It’s home to the world’s southernmost colony of Gentoo Penguins. Livingstone Island (coordinates, 62°36’S 60°30’W) is one of the South Shetland Islands. Hannah Point where these videos were taken is on the south coast of Livingstone island. To the north is Ustra Peak with Liverpool Beach extending between the peak and the tip of Hannah Point.

Macaroni Penguins plus Kelp Gulls and Southern Giant Petrels also nest here as do Blue-Eyed Shags, Skuas, and Snowy Sheathbills. I heard Southern elephant seals and Antarctic fur seals, which are among the larger life forms observed at Hannah Point.

76-Second Travel Show: “Sound Challenge”

3rd January 2011

Robert Reid of Lonely Planet asks you to begin 2011 right, with a promise: to close your eyes — and listen, just for 30 or 60 seconds, on your next trip. As part of ‘sound travel,’ or ‘enhanced sensory travel’ (EST), he spoke with blind traveler/author Tony Giles and acoustic engineer Trevor Cox of SonicWonders.org about the notion of listening more.
