Book Information

My eBooks are travel biographies of the observations and experiences of a totally blind and partially deaf man as he travels independently around the world having exciting adventures. The most recent volume, Seeing a Slice of Southern Africa My Way, published 31 December 2020, is a journey of continued self-discovery as I plot my way from multi-cultural South Africa with its complex society, to Malawi, with its picturesque and peaceful nature. This third book takes the reader through parts of Southern Africa, and offers a brief glimpse into a little of Lesotho, Swaziland, Mozambique, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

The first instalment of the trilogy, Seeing the World My Way, published in print in 2010 and released as an eBook in 2017, describes my early journeys in the USA, Australia, New Zealand and parts of South East Asia: out for adventure but consumed by alcohol as a method for dealing with my disabilities and other emotional issues. Full of adrenaline activities, it is a travel book of adventure and escapism.

Seeing the Americas My Way, the second eBook, is a more sober, yet more emotional tale. It highlights my challenges of confronting personal issues whilst travelling through the vast continents of North and South America in search of myself and inner peace.

These three eBooks, as standalones or read as a trilogy, give some insight into how a blind person is able to journey independently and gain a unique perspective on travel through a very different view.

More details

Seeing a Slice of Southern Africa My Way is the third in the Seeing The World series, by Tony Giles. It offers a unique insight into travelling in Southern Africa from a blind person’s perspective.

It is a journey of continued self-discovery for the author as he plots his way from multi-cultural South Africa with its complex society, to Malawi, with its picturesque and peaceful nature. This fascinating travel biography takes the reader through parts of Southern Africa, and offers a brief glimpse into a little of Lesotho, Swaziland, Mozambique, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

The history, culture, geography and nature of these nations is described through the author’s other senses and provides an alternative insight to travelling in a fascinating and, somewhat, dangerous region of Africa.

How does the author cope travelling around countries that lack the conventional infrastructures of the UK whilst blind? What skills does he use to tackle the many challenges that are encountered in such impoverished countries like Zimbabwe? These, alongside many more questions, are answered in the pages of this compact and, often, emotional story.

Tony’s second fascinating travel biography offers a more sensory observation of backpacking. From the sounds, smells and cuisine of Brazil and Argentina to the rhythm of salsa in Cuba. Mexico, Chile and Uruguay are also briefly explored.

Whilst there are the usual adrenaline fuelled activities associated with this author in the United States and Canada, the main thread of the story deals with a personal challenge of compromising between love and friendship.

It is a journey of self-discovery with a focus on spartan nature and isolation as a guidance to help the author resolve his emotional problems.

Continue following Tony’s unique wanderings to discover where he will lead you!
