This was the church of the Knights of St John in Valletta, with a chapel for each langue (the eight language groups the knights divided themselves up into). It was commissioned in 1572 by Grand Master Jean de la Cassière and construction was completed in 1577. In the second half of the 17th century the interior was aggrandised in the new Baroque style. Italian artist Mattia Preti was responsible for much of the decoration, including the six-section barrel-vaulted ceiling.
