Looking uphill along the main street leading from the port to the famous church of Panagia Evangelistria (Our Lady of Good Tidings). According to tradition the icon was found after the Virgin Mary appeared to the nun St. Pelagia and revealed to her the place where the icon was buried.Tony and Tatiana outside the entrance to Panagia Evangelistria. Construction of the church began following the icon’s discovery in 1823. It was inaugurated in 1830.

It is traditional for pilgrims to crawl on hands and knees from the port up the hill to the church to ask for help for their sick children.
